Online Database
Longford Roots undertakes research into the histories of
families who were resident in County Longford before 1900.
Where to start in genealogy or family
history depends on the amount of information one already has collected -
from relatives or old family papers, such as death, marriage and birth
certificates, will's etc. Even an old headstone on a grave can be
most informative, and a birth-date may be fixed by reference to age at
time of death. Also the probable date of a marriage can be calculated from
birth dates of the children. All of which demands slow and tedious
research.
In order to make an initial search a certain amount of
starting information is required, for example:
Ancestors father's name - Mother's
pre-marriage surname - Approximate year of birth - Name of Ancestor's
Husband or Wife.
In the past century most Irish people spoke
the Irish language and many emigrants were unfamiliar with a written
version of their surname in English. Quite often records were recorded in
English and the spelling and translation of surnames was haphazard. So you
may discover that your ancestor's surname is different from the way you
spell it now.
We have on our database the Church records of baptisms,
marriages and burials for the Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic parishes
of County Longford. The starting dates vary
from parish to parish, the earliest record is for 1779.
The 1901/1911 Census records, 1854 Griffith's Valuation, 1828-1833
Tithe Applotment Books are also available to us as well as local papers,
gravestone inscriptions, local school registers, voters lists, trade
directories and local folklore.
In
the Records section of this site you will find some information
on the records and resources available to the Longford Roots Centre for genealogical research,
as well as a surname index for the 1828-1833 Tithe Applotment Books, 1854 Griffith's Valuation and
the 1901 Census records.
In the History
section you will find some information on County Longford's local history including,
Old Longford Town, the History of Flax and Linen, the History of Longford,
Folk Medicine, Field Antiquities, and Landlords and their Estates.
